ABOUT THE GRANT
The Scranton Small Business Façade Improvement Grant Program provides Scranton commercial property owners and tenants with reimbursement grants of up to $10,000 (or 50 percent of total project cost, whichever is lower) to fund permanent exterior improvements to commercial buildings. Administered by the City of Scranton and funded through federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) dollars, the program is designed to create a more aesthetically pleasing environment along Scranton's commercial corridors and support the revitalization of the city's business districts. Grants are geographically targeted, with eligible properties limited to commercial buildings located within the federally designated low-to-moderate income areas of Scranton.
To qualify, applicants must be either the owner of a commercial property or a business owner or manager operating from a commercial property within the eligible area, with tenants required to submit an Owner Consent Form as part of their application. Businesses must be in compliance with all current City of Scranton codes and regulations, current on taxes, fines, and fees, and properly registered in the city. Eligible buildings are limited to existing commercial structures with facades visible from the street. New construction, mobile businesses, structural repairs, and interior projects of any kind are not eligible. Funded improvements must be permanent, exterior alterations that enhance the appearance of the commercial property, and may include the repair, preservation, improvement, replacement, or installation of windows and doors, signage, lighting, awnings, canopies, and sunshades, decking and stairs, gutters and downspouts, cornices or decorative trim, historically significant architectural details, masonry, pointing, or carpentry work, painting or surface treatment, entranceways to buildings or parking lots, greenery, and sidewalks, patios, walkways, benches, planters, and other permanent exterior features.

Las Cruces Small Business Safety Improvement Program

The Las Cruces Small Business Safety Improvement Grant Program provides Las Cruces small businesses, qualifying nonprofits, and commercial property owners with reimbursement grants of up to $5,000 to fund security improvements designed to enhance business safety and deter crime. Administered by the City of Las Cruces Economic Development Department in partnership with the Las Cruces Police Department, the program is geographically targeted to two Metropolitan Redevelopment Areas (MRAs): the El Paseo/South Solano MRA and the W. Picacho and Motel Boulevard MRA. Eligible security improvements include security cameras, locks, doors, door and window sensors, outdoor lighting, and fencing. To qualify, businesses and nonprofits must be independently owned, have 40 or fewer full-time employees, and be located within the eligible MRA boundaries. Commercial property owners located within the MRAs are also eligible to apply. Grants are issued on a first-come, first-served basis as a reimbursement, meaning applicants must complete their improvements and pay upfront before submitting for reimbursement. In addition to grant funding, participating businesses can access free Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) assessments through the Las Cruces Police Community Outreach Unit, which include on-site safety evaluations, crime prevention recommendations such as landscaping changes and Neighborhood Watch coordination, and connections to community safety training resources.
Alachua Small Grant Initiative
Alachua County
The Alachua County Small Grant Initiative (SGI) provides Alachua County, Florida nonprofit grassroots organizations and emerging small businesses with grants of up to $5,000 to fund one-time capacity-building or infrastructure improvement projects that serve residents living at or below 150 percent of the federal poverty level. Administered by the Alachua County Commission, the program funds projects that address one or more of four priority areas: safe and affordable housing, adequate food, quality health care, and quality childcare and education. Grants are awarded annually with a project period running from October through the following September, contingent on funding appropriation by the County Commission. Eligibility for emerging small businesses is defined as organizations with 25 or fewer permanent, full-time employees and a net worth of no more than $1 million. All applicants (nonprofits and small businesses alike) must demonstrate that their proposed project directly serves Alachua County residents living at or below 150 percent of the federal poverty level in one or more of the four priority areas. Each organization may submit only one application per funding cycle. Applications are submitted electronically through the county's OpenGov portal, and complete Request for Applications (RFA) materials, application instructions, and eligibility requirements are posted there each cycle. Late applications are not accepted, and applications that do not meet grant requirements are rejected. An optional pre-application workshop is typically held before each funding round to cover the application process, navigating the OpenGov portal, and tips for preparing a successful proposal (with both in-person and virtual attendance options available).

This training program helps Iowa businesses fund customized training for current employees. The program is designed to foster the growth and competitiveness of Iowa’s business and industry by ensuring that Iowa’s workforce has the skills and expertise to compete with any workforce outside the state of Iowa. The grant covers basic adult education, job-related instruction (or on-the-job training), skills assessments, testing and evaluation of employees, and travel reimbursement. Each of Iowa’s community colleges assists businesses with the development of training plans that are funded by forgivable loans. The maximum award is $25,000 for each project at a business site. A business site may be approved for multiple projects-with maximum funding over three years not to exceed $100,000. A cash match is required for projects exceeding $4,999.
