The Best Business Grants in Kansas

Securing capital is often the biggest hurdle for any founder. While loans and credit cards are common, they come with the weight of repayment and interest. Grants are the ideal alternative because they generally don't have to be paid back. However, there is a catch: grants are highly competitive and can be very difficult to find. We've built this guide to help you understand the grant landscape in Kansas.
Kansas offers a geographically distributed grant landscape with notable strengths in two areas that set it apart from many states: tourism development and workforce apprenticeships. The Kansas Department of Tourism runs dedicated grants to help businesses build new travel attractions and fund marketing, while the Kansas Department of Commerce supports small businesses registering new apprentices in high-demand occupations. Rather than concentrating funding in a single major city, Kansas spreads grant programs across mid-size cities including Topeka, Kansas City, Leavenworth, and Haysville, each running its own local business incentives. Award sizes range from $7,000 apprenticeship grants up to $75,000 for major tourism attraction projects, with most programs operating on rolling deadlines.
At the state level, the Kansas Department of Commerce administers the Registered Apprenticeship grant for small businesses and the K-GLOBE program, which reimburses up to half of eligible export and international marketing expenses for Kansas companies expanding overseas. Kansas businesses focused on exporting have a second option as well: the federally funded State Trade Expansion Program (STEP), which the Department of Commerce also administers and which can support international activities beyond what K-GLOBE's state funds cover. Beyond the state agencies, local programs span Topeka and Shawnee County, Kansas City and Wyandotte County, Leavenworth, and Haysville, giving businesses across the state access to community-level funding.
Kansas businesses are also eligible for hundreds of national grant programs from federal agencies, corporations, and foundations. Those programs aren't covered on this page, but you can search our complete grant database to see every state and national grant your business qualifies for.
