The Best Business Grants in Michigan

Securing capital is often the biggest hurdle for any founder. While loans and credit cards are common, they come with the weight of repayment and interest. Grants are the ideal alternative because they generally don't have to be paid back. However, there is a catch: grants are highly competitive and can be very difficult to find. We've built this guide to help you understand the grant landscape in Michigan.
Michigan's grant ecosystem reflects the state's economic story: substantial investment in advanced manufacturing modernization at the state level, paired with an unusually deep network of Detroit-focused programs designed to support the city's ongoing revitalization. Detroit alone offers four distinct grant programs spanning new business launches, brick-and-mortar expansion, neighborhood improvements, and one of the country's only "legacy business" grants supporting businesses that have operated in Detroit for 30 or more years. Award sizes range from $5,000 workplace safety matching grants up to $2 million for major business development projects, with most programs offering rolling deadlines.
Most state-level grants are run by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC), which administers the Business Development Program for major capital projects, the Industry 4.0 Technology Implementation Grant for manufacturers, and the Match on Main program for downtown businesses. The Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity runs the Going PRO Talent Fund for workforce training, and Michigan OSHA administers workplace safety grants. Beyond the state agencies, Michigan's nonprofits play a big role in local funding, with Hatch Detroit, Motor City Match, the Detroit Regional Chamber, and other organizations administering programs alongside city-level efforts in Detroit, Midland, and Muskegon.
Michigan businesses are also eligible for hundreds of national grant programs from federal agencies, corporations, and foundations. Those programs aren't covered on this page, but you can search our complete grant database to see every state and national grant your business qualifies for. Hatch Detroit Contest
Hatch Detroit
The Comerica Hatch Detroit Contest by TechTown awards a $100,000 grand prize cash grant plus a package of in-kind services to one independent retail entrepreneur to help open a brick-and-mortar storefront in Detroit, Hamtramck, or Highland Park. Administered by TechTown Detroit and sponsored by Comerica Bank, the contest is built around the concept of "crowd entrepreneurship," giving Detroit residents an active role in the city's redevelopment by voting for their favorite finalists in successive elimination rounds. The application process narrows applicants down from the full pool to a Top 25, Top 10, and Top 4, with public voting playing a major role in determining the eventual winner during a live "Hatch Off" event. The contest is focused exclusively on independent brick-and-mortar retail concepts, including stores, bars, restaurants, studios, gyms, and other retail-driven businesses, and is intended to revitalize commercial corridors, activate vacant spaces, and spur further community investment. Food trucks and franchise stores are not eligible, though social enterprises and L3Cs may apply if they have a strong retail component. Beyond the grand prize, finalists gain significant visibility with thousands of potential customers and funders, plus access to the Hatch Detroit alumni network, which provides ongoing technical support and additional spot grant funding opportunities.

Grants are need-based and are designed to fill the funding gap remaining after applicants have secured other capital, with the award typically not exceeding 50% of total project costs and requiring at least 10% owner equity. In addition to grant funding, the program supports applicants with financial planning and project management assistance, lender networking events that connect businesses to community lending partners, and facilitated introductions to help applicants close any remaining loan financing they may need. Awardees that open are also promoted through Motor City Match, DEGC, and Detroit Means Business channels, providing additional publicity for the business.
