ABOUT THE GRANT
The Commissioner Yvette Colbourne's Small Business and Nonprofit Grant provides Miramar, Florida small businesses and nonprofit organizations with up to $5,000 in grant funding to support capacity building, strengthen operations, and stimulate increased business activity. Administered by the City of Miramar's Economic Development and Housing Department and named for Commissioner Yvette Colbourne, the program serves both Mom and Pop small businesses (independently owned and operated with ten or fewer employees) and nonprofit organizations operating under section 501(c)(3) of the IRS tax code. Grant funds may be used for the purchase of machinery and equipment, professional services such as legal, accounting, and marketing, supplies and inventory, technology infrastructure and system upgrades, commercial lease rental deposits, salaries, and other miscellaneous business expenses.
To qualify, applicants must operate within the City of Miramar (either at a commercial location or home-based), have been in operation for at least one year, possess a City of Miramar Business Tax Receipt (and Broward County, if applicable), maintain an active Sunbiz registration showing the current business name, and be current on property taxes if a property owner. All organizations applying for funding are required to attend a grant workshop to review program requirements, and recipients may be asked to provide proof that funds were used for the purposes stated in their application.

Administered by Start Garden — a Grand Rapids-based accelerator focused on equitable entrepreneur-driven economic development — the competition is open to anyone in Michigan with a business idea, including aspiring entrepreneurs and existing businesses exploring a new opportunity. Applicants submit a 100-second video pitch to enter, and 100 finalists are selected to each receive a $1,000 no-strings-attached cash grant to begin preparing for the program's Demo Day event in downtown Grand Rapids. At Demo Day, ten grand prize winners are each awarded an additional $20,000 cash grant from Start Garden, and through a partnership with Northern Initiatives — a nonprofit Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) that has supported Michigan small businesses for over 30 years — each of those ten winners is also offered an optional pre-approved $20,000 loan, bringing the maximum potential capital per winner to $40,000. While the specific blend of grant, loan, and additional capital partner funding varies depending on each winner's business and chosen pathway, the overall program represents one of the most significant pools of accessible startup funding available in the state. A separate high school category for students under 18 awards $1,000 each to five selected finalists, with an additional $5,000 going to a high school winner chosen on Demo Day. Beyond funding, finalists receive two months of mentorship and refinement support from Start Garden's leadership team and partners, along with visibility through the Demo Day platform and ongoing connections within Michigan's entrepreneurial ecosystem.

Idaho businesses that are training new workers or re-training existing employees may qualify for an Employer Grant. The intention behind the grant is to help spur economic activity, increase skills for workers, and integrate technology into the workforce, among other benefits.
North Miami Economic Development Small Business Grant
North Miami EDD
The Economic Development Small Business Grant provides North Miami small businesses with reimbursement of up to $7,500 to fund expenses that help them grow and operate more effectively. Administered by the City of North Miami's Economic Development Department and funded through the federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program, the grant is open to both for-profit and nonprofit businesses with a physical commercial location within the city. Funds may be applied to a range of approved uses, including equipment and tools, training and certifications, supplies and inventory, marketing and branding, energy-efficient upgrades, commercial liability insurance, and professional services such as CPAs and attorneys. The program operates as a reimbursement: businesses must spend a minimum of 20% of the approved award upfront, and reimbursement is issued in a single payment once eligible receipts have been verified by the department. Applications are reviewed on a first-come, first-served basis subject to available funding.
