How to Create a Winning Investor Pitch Deck

Investors see hundreds of decks every year. Don’t overwhelm them with text, jargon, or complicated graphics. Focus on clarity. Use short bullet points, simple visuals, and straightforward language that anyone could understand.


We tell everyone to write as if their audience was a golden retriever or a small child. You can always add more detail verbally if investors want additional information. But if you make your presentation too complicated you might lose their interest before you even start.


2. Tell a Story

The best pitch decks flow like a narrative. Start with the problem, introduce your solution, show the size of the opportunity, and build toward why your team is uniquely positioned to win. Stories are easier to remember than data alone.


3. Remember Your Audience

You spend every hour on your business and understand every detail of your product, industry, and business model. It can be easy to forget that your audience doesn't know nearly as much about these areas as you do. Remember that your reader will be new to this space and that it's your job to explain things to them!


After you're finished your presentation, try to take a step back and read it from the perspective of somebody who knows nothing about your company and industry. Did you explain everything clearly? Share your presentation with a friend or family member who knows nothing about your industry. Ask them if there were any slides that were confusing because they didn't have enough background information. This will ensure you've created a clear and intelligible presentation.


4. Add Visuals Where You Can

A picture is worth a thousand words and can make your pitch much more engaging. Our template is mostly text because we don't know anything about your business! But you should add images, charts, and visuals anywhere you can. Not only will this make your pitch more interesting to look at, it will make it much easier to understand. A picture of your product or service will be much easier to understand than 3 paragraphs of text describing it!


5. Focus on the Problem and Solution

Investors want to see that you’re solving a real, urgent problem—and that your solution is both practical and scalable. Be specific about the pain point and how your business addresses it in a way competitors can’t.


6. Highlight the Market Opportunity

VCs and Angel investors are looking to fund BIG opportunities. Show that the market is big enough to support your growth. Use realistic data and credible sources. A compelling pitch deck gives investors confidence that there’s a sizable opportunity.


Use simple and transparent math to show the size of your annual revenue opportunity. The formula is simple: (number of potential customers) x (price per customer) = revenue opportunity. Don't just slap together one of those ridiculous TAM/SAM/SOM charts. Those are hocus pocus and investors will immediately ignore them. Do the math and make sure it's easy for an outsider to follow.


7. Showcase Your Team

Investors don’t just invest in ideas, they invest in people. Highlight the strengths and experience of your leadership team. Even if you’re early stage, demonstrate why you’re the right group to make this happen.


And don't be afraid to highlight key hires you need to make. Nobody starts their business with a full team of 100 people, it's ok that there are areas of expertise you're looking to add. If nobody on your team has a marketing background, that's totally fine as long as you show that you're aware of that gap and you have plans to fill it quickly!


8. Keep the Financials High-Level

At the pitch stage, investors aren’t expecting a detailed financial analysis with 300 lines of complicated forecasts. Instead, include key financials (like projected revenue and major costs) and explain how you’ll use the funding. Save the detailed spreadsheets for follow-up conversations.


9. Practice Your Delivery

A polished deck is important, but how you present it matters just as much. Practice your timing, anticipate investor questions, and be prepared to expand on any slide in more detail.
